moving into virginia and north carolina. we have torrential downfalls right now. you see new york city is at 33 degrees. that's going to be an area where we will see that snow start off as rain and then it changes in the back side of the storm. so most of today, it's okay in new york city but then it turns into tonight. we do are blizzard warnings in the bright pink here. that's an area where we could end up with two feet of snow. there's only really been four snowstorms with two feet of snow in boston. this could be the fifth one and a crippling storm. >> living up to the label historic. >> absolutely. >>> turning now to california where a massive manhunt has the los angeles area on virtual lockdown. the lapd even putting extra security at their headquarters because the spblgt used to be one of their own. christopher dorner is wanted in multiple shootings spanning six days. the 33-year-old said he's declaring war with the lapd after losing his job. according to his late and rambling manifesto, he wants to revenge until his name is clear. he writes the violence of action will be high.

hospital and this is going on and we know the fbi is involved and l.a.p.d. special alert around the city and in fact, they have guards outside of l.a.p.d.'s main headquarters and don't see that working with them over the years. motorcycle police officers have been pulled from the streets and every single unit required to have two officers in it it and throughout the state of california everyone is on tactical alert. from san diego, all the way to the border, as far as east as las vegas. we've been told from san diego police they found a wallet, wallet was given to him this morning not far from the airport there that belongs to the suspect. and a badge was found this that wallet. christopher dorner is the suspect's name and they don't know or haven't been able to tell us if that badge was real, if it was fake, something he purchased, if it was something, we don't believe it was the l.a.p.d. badge they say, but a badge of some sort. and we'll keep you updated, alisyn, across the state every single law enforcement agency is on tactical alert trying to find the suspect and there have been no

on the roads is going to be just treacherous from areas like new york city up through hartford through providence, rhode island and over into boston too and moving into central and northern new england. it's coming in pieces. we have a lot of moisture network with and a lot of cold air moving in as well. blizzard warnings are posted all along the coast of new england with eastern massachusetts likely the area that will get hit the hardest with power outages, a lot of wind damage, wind gusts could be as high as about 60 to 65 miles per hour. you can see boston could end up with more than two feet of snow. new york city should be closer to six to ten inches and hartford 12 to 18. that's the east. out west we have some weather of your own from san francisco down into l.a. we have a lot of showers out that way and those will continue to affect the coast of l.a. temperatures will only be in the 40s and 50s on the elko, nevada could end up with a wintry mix. snow in the northeast and rain in california. it should wind down tomorrow. >> i would take the rain if i had a choice. >> so i would.

in new york city, the nation's largest public school operation, educators have softened the discipline code. so now students can curse at their teachers and simply get a reprimand. no suspension, just a little scolding. new york city education spokeswoman margie feinberg said new rules will keep the kids who commit low level infractions in class where they can learn from their mistakes. yeah. sure. as a former teacher, i know if the system allows students to curse out teachers in front of all students, all discipline breaks down. by the way, that's one of the reasons i said -- send my kids to catholic school in new york state. disrespect is everywhere. on the net, troubled people say the most horrendous things hiding behind their machines. on television reality program off the chart irresponsible. shows like jersey shore and this idiot thing in west virginia debase our culture all day long. the miami judge may have overreacted a bit, but he should be applauded. america has got to get back to basics. if we don't respect each other, we are headed for big trouble. i believe we are headed

to get up to 3 ft. of snow, while new york city is expected 10 to 14 in.. to the south, philadelphia was looking at a possible two to 5 in.. the snow is expected to start friday morning with the heaviest amounts cummingtonite into tomorrow morning. the snow could block some residents indoors for days, as the forecast calls for a potentially historic winter storm. dingto gk up on the essentials like milk, bread and batteries. it is also leaving a huge impact on travel. >> i just got off to phone with the duty manager and he stated that there have been flights that have been canceled. boston has had three flights canceled and then this block to york jfk, they have six of slides that have also been canceled. philadelphia is on time but that still may change. we are talking about the arrival times. we are way ahead into the future but according to the duty manager they are doing this just to make sure that people are not caught off guard. 39 departures and 18 arrivals. at terminal 1 at united they are rebuilding their passengers. they have a lot of scrambling going on. >> storm tracker 4

on the northeast. could bring easily up to 2 feet to new york city, long island, all of connecticut, all of rhode island, eastern massachusetts, coastal new hampshire and maine blizzard warnings. millions of people, hours left to prepare, the blizzard of 2013 is starting today. you can see where it's located behind me, off the outer banks of north carolina, the heavy rain shield goes up through the mid-atlantic, all the way into southern jersey. the snow part of the storm has yet to begin. that will happen as we go through the morning hours and especially after noon today into new england. that's really your cut-off time if you're anywhere from federal jersey northward. whatever you have to get done, you'll do it in rain this morning. after about noon, get off the roads. that's when we could get stuck and we want plows to be able to clear everything out. as far as the snow totals go, this is the latest thinking on the storm. we're looking at the possibility of over 2 feet in a huge section of eastern new england. that's the historic part of the storm, from the boston area down to providence. look

incredible stuff. the hardest forecast is the new york city because the temperatures are kind of borderline. it may start as snow, go over to rain, a little sleet and back over to snow late. that's why the snow totals for new york, i have them down to six to ten inches. if it's all snow, it could be as much as 14 inches in new york city. that's the big question mark. hartford's going to get nailed, also all the way to southern portions of new hampshire and portland, maine. i mentioned temperatures. notice it's 38 in philly, 34 in baltimore. that's why southwards i don't think you'll get much out of this at all. that's why d.c.'s not getting snow. look how cold it is in the new england area. this is how it plays out. again, the bottom line, the worst of the storm arrives after noon today. so if you're in northern jersey, new york city area, long island, connecticut, hudson valley all the way through eastern mass and rhode island, do not be on the roads after noon today. that's the most important message everyone needs to know because if you do that and you get stuck on the roads, it's going

all of new york state through vermont and new hampshire. some of our big cities, new york city's the trickiest forecast along with long island and coastal connecticut. we're going to go from snow tomorrow morning to a period of rain and heavy rain friday. and then over to a period of heavy snow as the storm leaves late friday night. that's why the storm totals are lower there. but hartford's going to be in the bull's-eye. again, boston, 18 to 24 inches possible. so that would probably cripple boston. travel would be difficult probably till maybe saturday night or maybe sunday morning. make your plan as cordingly. i know airlines are already starting to cancel flights and letting you change stuff for free. go ahead and do that now while you can. more updates throughout the morning here on "morning joe." we're brewed by starbucks. how do you keep an older car running like new? you ask a ford customer. when they tell you that you need your oil changed you got to bring it in. if your tires need to be rotated, you have to get that done as well. jackie, tell me why somebody should br

new york city, they could get upwards of a foot of snow. snow and wind as the system gets off the coast and really starts affecting the northeast. in new england it's a full-out blizzard with 1 to 2 feet of snowfall. you're looking at the start times here. for us, it's friday morning as rain. for areas around new york, it's friday early afternoon. they by friday evening, up into eastern new england. again, significant travel delays for the northeast, probably all out coming to a spot in areas. so just a newsens storm for us, but a full-out blizzard with high winds, a lot of snow, and big-time snow drifts occurring throughout areas of new england. it's not just one storm, but two storms. area of low pressure down to the south. another area of low pressure off to the west around chicago, that will both start merging just as they get past us to the northeast. so we'll never get that merging occurring right here. take a look at storm team 4 radar, quiet, nothing good on right now. the snow or rain will start here for us. areas that could see just a bit of a wintry mix with snow, m

forecasting for new york city on that one. it is on the rain-snow line the temperature may be a little bit too warm tomorrow to accumulate any of the snow during the daytime. tomorrow night that changes. it will cross over to snow. 7:00 p.m. all snow in boston. entire storm is snow in boston. that is why accumulation there will be so great. new york city, at least according to a lot of models we're looking at, probably not getting below freezing until later tomorrow night that is when the snow significantly accumulates. we're off by 30, 40 miles one direction or the another. there could be snow longer period. that would increase snowfall totals. take a look what at least for now we're forecasting for snowfall totals. a bull's-eye two to three feet west of boston. worcester hills, nash issue waa, new hampshire. a big swath of this getting a foot and a half of snow and 6 to 12 here in new york city. if it gets colder that number could be higher. i don't think it will happen but have a lot of uncertainty for at least in new york city for this time. not uncertain about boston but new york city sti
